fascinating collection of Islamic arts. Enter King Farouk’s
hunting museum for its bewildering taxidermic treasures

3. OUTSIDE CAIRO ADD-
ON/ OPTIONS 3.1 Dahshur (half
day tour)
» Known for its five pyramids, three of which
is situated at the edge of the desert & the other
two lie beyond.
» The North Brick Pyramid known as Black Pyramid
(since its built from black Nile mud) dates from twelfth
dynasty where Sesostris III is buried- one of the greatest
Pharaohs in Egyptian history & whose empire extended
from Nubia to Asia.
» The Pyramid of Ammenemes II known as the White
Pyramid (since it was constructed with blocks of Tura
limestone. The royal sarcophagus was found in the burial
chamber. The pyramid is now on its very ruined state.
» The South Brick Pyramid known as the black pyramid
where lies the tomb of King Ammenemes III of the twelfth
dynasty.
» Bent or Rhomboidal Pyramid whose name was taken
on account of tilting angle about half way up. The corbelled
roof of projecting stone & the framework of cedar
wood around the room imported from Lebanon by Sneferu
are truly remarkable.
» The Northern Stone Pyramid known as the Red
Pyramid built by King Sneferu after the Bent Pyramid.
3.2 Al Fayoum Oasis (Day
Tour)
» A little more than 100km from Cairo, Fayoum
region is a large cultivated area in the desert so described
as an oasis but actually more strategically linked to
Nile Valley & to the Nile by the natural stream
called Bahr el Yusef or Canal of Joseph . You will pass
farms & boundless green fields. See one of the seven
‘waterwheels’ still used in the irrigation
system. Fifteen kilometers further north is Lake Qar’un
& you won’t miss the magnificent Wadi Al Rayan
Waterfalls & its nearby fine sand dunes. Pharaonic
ruins are abundant but rarely visited & among scattered
remains can be seen as limestone blocks & granite
architraves, some of which bear inscriptions as those
in Crocodilopolis, Pyramid in Hawaret el Maqta &
the nearby Labyrinth. Maidum Pyramids can also be made
part of the excursion to Fayoum.
3.3 Al Ismailiya
(Day Tour) » The capital of Suez Canal district
situated halfway between Port Said & Suez, this
tranquil town of tree-lined boulevards & sprawling
gardens around the town is home to a tremendous canal
trade & over 50,000 people. Once known as Timsah
(crocodile) Village, Ismailiya is named after Khedive
Ismail of Egypt, the last independent Khedive. Its unique
provincial charm attracts visitors & relaxation
takes ground at nearby Lake Timsah (crocodile lake)
or the El Mora (bitter) Lakes & other village beaches.
3.4 Ein Sukhna
(nearest beach to Cairo for a day bask or few days on
a 4-star hotel) » Its proximity to Cairo & Suez make
a viable quick option over going to Hurghada with its
many beautiful beaches & in fact have turned into
up- and- coming tourist town especially for Egyptians,
& foreign residents. Weekend holiday seekers would
comfortably choose to leisurely relax here where some
hotels provide many swimming/ plunge pools & never
fall short of activities such as water aerobics, morning
exercises, beach volleyball, amphitheater programs like
“Galabiya night.
3.5 Suez Canal
(Day Tour) » Officially opened on November 18, 1869,
the Suez Canal stretches without locks, & at a depth
of up to 15m from Port Said on the Mediterranean, past
Ismailiya, to Suez on the Red Sea. A visit here will
remind you of a miracle of 19th century engineering
& the crucial element of the infrastructure of the
British Empire, & President Nasser’s nationalizing
the canal in 1956 precipitating a British- French- Israeli
invasion.
3.6 Alexandria
(Day Tour)
» An early trip to Alexandria includes private
a/c car for an approximately 3-hours drive. The Mediterranean
city exudes a European air & sophistication with
Greek & Italian influence. Tour includes visit to
National Museum, Pompey’s Pillar (actually dates
from the time of Diocletian), catacomb of Kom el Shuqafa
(Pharaonic & Roman tombs), Roman amphitheater, &
Montazah Palace garden.
3.7 Al Alamein
(Day Tour)
» Located in the Western Desert approximately
110km west of Alexandria is the site of the largest
battles of WW II. The Commonwealth Cemeteries contain
over 7000 tombstones overlooking the desert battlefield.
3.8 Dahab (3
nights)
» A small, intimate, & easy going resort on
the spectacular Gulf of Aqaba, Dahab meaning “gold”
in arabic is favored by many travelers especially for
diving, snorkeling & underwater safari. One won’t
hesitate to explore further its nearby Sinai oasis hence
more days are recommended.
3.9 Ras Mohamed
in Sharm el Sheikh
» From Sharm el Sheikh, it takes around 30 on
the paved way & about 5km off the road. Ascend to
Shark Observatory to view the panorama of bothe Aqaba
& Suez Gulf. Then back to the beach to enjoy the
splendid coral reef & pure water.
3.10 St.
Catherine (when in Sharm el Sheikh)
» Trekking the mountain usually start late at
night. Experience the fantastic sunrise at the biblical
peak of Sinai. On your descent, visit the monastery
of St. Catherine one of the oldest Byzantine architecture.
It posses a vast repository of oldest manuscripts, exquisite
icons dating from 4th century, & mosaic arts.
3.11 Abu
Simbel (with Nile cruise or when in Aswan)
» Tours can be incorporated into cruise package
& is highly recommended. The amazing rock- cut temples
of Ramses II & Queen Nafertari were saved from permanent
submission during the building of the Aswan Dam painstakingly
moved & funded by the UNESCO. Guarding the entrance
to the temples are 4 colossi seated statues of the pharaoh
staring out across Lake Nasser.
3.12 Port
Said
» Founded in 1860, Port Said became Africa’s
gateway to the Mediterranean with the building of Suez
Canal. The city is declared a tax-free zone in 1976
& has since evolved into a shopping resort. Add
to this the visual interest of the rows of tankers,
freighters, & cruise ships that dock next to the
white colonnade of the Port Authority.

WESTERN DESERT SAFARI
» An adventure for the rugged through circuits
of oases sprinkled throughout what was once known as
Libyan Desert until World War II- Bahariya, Farafra,
Dakhla & Kharga- marks the trail of prehistoric
branch of the Nile.
4.1 Overnight
at Bahariya Oasis (with hotel accommodation)
» Bahariya oasis is 370km drive from Cairo. You’ll
visit the little museum in Bawiti with some fascinating
local finds. Then enter the marvelous original tomb
of Benantui from 26th dynasty. Next, to the Amasis chapels
which are being preserved in an unusual sympathetic
style. After, a visit to the temple of Alexander the
Great, Valley of the Golden Mummies, Tombs of the Nobles.
In the afternoon, enjoy the highest point in Bahariya’s
English Mountain. Back to Cairo on the second day.
4.2 Bahariya
at Desert Camp (3 Days)
» In addition to above itinerary as first day,
you’ll start the morning drive towards the incredible
White Desert & will stop by the Crystal & Black
Mountain for visit & lunch. Back to Cairo on the
third day.
4.3 Bahariya
& Farafra (4 Days)
» In addition to two days itineraries above, the
third day starts with morning drive towards small oasis
of Farafra to visit the art museum, the hot spring,
& the old oasis- have lunch & back to Bahariya
oasis for overnight camping at the black desert or the
same hotel. On the fourth day, drive to Cairo.
4.4 Bahariya,
Farafra, Dakhla & Kharga (5 Days)
» In addition to the three days itineraries above,
the fourth day start with morning drive to reach Kharga
oasis & visit the temple of Hibis, the Christian
tombs of Bagawat & the old town of Kharga. After
lunch, drive to visit Nadora fortress then back to the
hotel. On the fifth day, drive to visit Baris oasis,
Doush temple then drive to Luxor.
4.5 Bahariya,
Farafra, Dakhla, & Kharga (6 Days)
» This is the same program as above (5 days Bahariya,
etc) except that there will be additional day at Dakhla
oasis to further explore the Old Covered City with its
oil press, school, courthouse, and dwelling chambers,
Muzzawaka “external” & the Deir el Haggar.
On the last day, drive to Luxor.
4.6 Siwa, Bahariya,
Farafra, Dakhla, & Kharga (7 Days) 1st day: Siwa Oasis
» Visit the Temple of Amun where the ancients
came to visit the famous Oracle. You will look at high
quality hieroglyphics & carvings at the Temple of
Umm Beyid & see the “Pool of Cleopatra. Then
drive to eastern Siwa, rarely visited, to see the fascinating
remains of a Roman town & an abandoned Libyan village
with Ptolemaic temple in the ruins. Then a journey to
Western Desert & back to the hotel- overnight. 2nd day: The Long Way to
Bahariya
» Travel across the expanse of the Great Western
Desert, pass the Newamisa Lakes & as well the many
wonderful & ever changing sand dunes. This is the
very area where the army of Cabyses disappeared under
the sands having lunch boxes at the desert. Overnight
at the hotel. 3rd day: Bahariya Oasis
» Visit to little museum in Bawiti, enter the
marvelous original tomb of Benantui from 26th dynasty,
& the Amasis chapel. After a visit to Temple of
Alexander, have lunch then drive to visit English house,
the hot spring, & watch the sun go down over the
Salt lake before returning to the hotel. 4th day: The Great Day to
the White Desert
» In the morning, drive towards the incredible
white desert & enjoy the beautiful shapes of the
limestones. On the way back will stop by the Crystal
& Black mountain. Overnight in camp in the White
Desert. 5th day: Farafra- Dakhla
Oasis
» Visit the oasis of Farafra in the morning then
continue to drive on to reach Dakhla. On the way, visit
the picturesque village of El Qasr (built on traditional
Islamic style), Deir el Haggar, & the Roman burial
ground of Muzzawaka. Then drive to the painted rock
at the Yellow desert. Overnight camping. 6th day: Kharga Oasis
» In the morning, drive to reach Kharga oasis
& visit the temple of Hibis, the Christian tombs
of Bagawat & the old town of Kharga. After lunch,
drive to visit Nadora fortress area then back to the
hotel. 7th day: Kharga Oasis- Luxor
After breakfast, drive to visit Baris oasis, Doush temple
& drive to Luxor.
4.7 El Gilf
el Kebir Expedition (8 Days) 1st Day: El Gilf
- The program starts from your arrival, then transfer
to your hotel - overnight. 2nd Day:: Bahariya
Oasis 3rd Day:: Farafra
Oasis 4th Day:“No
man’s Land” Arriving to a campsite, trek
the area & rediscover what this are was like thousands
of years ago through rock inscriptions, tools, &
fossils. You’ll find no signs of life & the
only thing dominating is sand and vastness. 5th Day: At the
eastern side of El Gilf el Kebir, travel through terrain
hardly visited by any other person. Arriving to Wadi
el Mashi, explore ancient settlements, remote oases,
rock inscriptions, & geological formations.
6th Day: Drive from Wadi el Mashi to Aqaba as to get
closer to El Gilf el Kebir. Dinner & overnight camping. 6th Day: Travelling
deeper into ElGilf el Kebir, discover the caves of Wadi
Sura. Using flashlights, go deeper into the caves recognizing
the rock inscriptions that resemble inhabitants, hunting
& swimming. Ancient lake deposits characterize the
upper part of the plateau.
8th Day: Head back to Cairo.
